About the Society
Preserving Cicero since 1978
The Town of Cicero Historical Society was established in 1978 with a mission to preserve, protect, and share the history of Cicero and the people who have called it home. The Society received its Absolute Charter from the New York State Board of Regents in 1979 and today continues that mission through the preservation of historic buildings, artifacts, photographs, documents, and the stories of our community.
Our home at 6453 Route 31 brings several chapters of Cicero’s history together in one place. At the heart of the complex is the Stone Arabia School, a one-room schoolhouse built in 1854 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007. Nearby stands an early hand-hewn log structure, saved from demolition, dismantled in 1986, and reconstructed by Society members in 1989. The Museum & Learning Center, opened in 2006, provides additional space to preserve and interpret Cicero’s agricultural, commercial, civic, and family history.
The preservation of Cicero’s history has always depended upon people willing to save it. Longtime Town Historian Lona Flynn was among those who championed the Stone Arabia School and spent decades documenting and sharing the community’s past. That work continues today through the efforts of volunteers, members, donors, local historians, and residents who believe that Cicero’s stories are worth preserving.
More than a museum, the Cicero Historical Society is a place where the community can explore where we came from, understand how Cicero has changed, and help preserve its history for the generations still to come.
